Many people are habitual about taking CBD, and it’s a natural remedy that reduces anxiety, eases chronic pain, improves sleep, and gives people a more relaxed daily life. And recent studies suggest CBD may ease similar conditions in pets.

Benefits of CBD for Pets

Research on the benefits of CBD for pets is still new, but we know that the endocannabinoid receptors in humans and animals are very similar. Therefore, many pet owners have found CBD effective in reducing their pet’s anxiety, reducing muscle and joint pain, and clearing skin conditions.

CBD Pet Products

Similar to human CBD products, CBD for pets can come in a variety of forms. Two of the most popular CBD options are oil tinctures and infused treats.

Tincture

CBD tinctures are taken orally by dropping the oil directly into your dog’s mouth. You can also serve your dog an oil tincture by placing the oil on a high-value treat such as cheese. Good Earth Organics carries a 500mg/30ml CBD tincture for dogs formulated with full-spectrum hemp oil and medium-chain triglycerides from Hippie Hounds.  This tincture is perfect for dogs with food allergies or other sensitivities with the rich ingredients found in some treats. The tincture comes with a dropper that is labeled for accurate dosing. Dosing varies depending on the size of the dog and the severity of symptoms, and we always suggest starting with a low dose and slowly increasing the amount as needed.

Infused Treats

If your pet is crazy about peanut butter and pumpkin, then they’ll love the Hippie Hounds 10mg CBD Hemp Infused Canine Treats. Made with all-natural ingredients and infused with a blend of cannabinoids and terpenes, these treats are great for the anxiety of food-motivated pups who may suffer from storms or fireworks. We recommend starting a 50-80lb dog with 10mg and slowly increasing the dosage if necessary. For pets under 50lbs, begin with a slow dose between 2mg and 5mg.

Getting Your Pet Started with CBD

Before starting any CBD regimen with your pet, consult with your veterinarian for the best way to incorporate CBD into your pet’s overall health or treatment plan. It’s vital to ensure CDB won’t interfere with any current medications or health concerns.

If you’re new to CBD, we suggest starting your pet with a tincture. An oil tincture is easier to dose than treats because you can measure the exact amount you’re giving your pet. Even if you have a larger animal, start with a low level, such as .5mg or 1mg for every 10lbs. Monitor your pet during their first few doses to determine if they need more or less.

If you’re using a balm or salve to treat skin irritation or muscle pain, start with a thin layering on a small section of the pet’s skin or fur to ensure they don’t have an allergic reaction. You can then apply more CBD balm or salve to the area as needed.
